The beauty of this Medusa holding her own head is far from the image portrayed in Greek Mythology of a monster, with living venomous snakes in place of hair which would turn to stone those who gazed upon her. Medusa lived and died on an island named Sarpedon and was slain by Perseus. Perhaps in this image she has foreseen her own demise as she prepares to paint her own self-portrait.
